Considering an Arm Lift? Here Is What the Recovery Really Looks Like
If you’re thinking about an arm lift, chances are you’ve already imagined what your arms might look like afterward. But another question is probably on your mind:
“What’s recovery really like?”
It’s one of the first questions people ask Rick J. Smith, MD, and for good reason. Understanding the healing process helps you prepare both physically and mentally, making the entire experience feel much more manageable.
An arm lift remains a popular option for people who have loose or hanging skin on the upper arms due to significant weight loss, aging, or changes in skin elasticity.
In fact, more than 23,000 arm lifts were performed in the United States in 2024, according to the American Society of Plastic Surgeons.
Here’s what you can expect.
The first few days
Your body has just undergone a major procedure, so plan to take it easy.
You’ll wear compression garments to help minimize swelling and support your healing tissues. Your arms will likely feel tight, swollen, and sore during the first several days. This is a normal part of the healing process.
You’ll also need someone to drive you home after your procedure and help with daily tasks for the first day or two, especially activities that involve reaching, lifting, or carrying.
Following Dr. Smith’s postoperative instructions carefully during this early phase helps set the stage for a smoother recovery.
Week one: Rest is part of the treatment
Many people feel noticeably better after several days, but don’t mistake feeling better for being fully healed. During the first week, your primary job is to protect your results.
We encourage short walks because they promote healthy circulation, but strenuous exercise, heavy lifting, and repetitive arm movements should wait until Dr. Smith tells you it’s safe.
This is also when swelling and bruising are often most noticeable. While it may be tempting to judge your results immediately, remember that your arms are still healing.
Weeks 2-6
As swelling gradually improves, you’ll begin seeing the new contours of your arms.
Many patients return to desk work within 1-2 weeks, depending on the physical demands of their job and how they’re healing. Activities requiring significant lifting or upper-body strength typically require more recovery time.
You’ll continue wearing compression garments as Dr. Smith recommends, and you’ll gradually increase your activity level during follow-up visits.
What about the scar?
Every arm lift leaves a scar. Dr. Smith believes people deserve honest conversations about that reality.
He typically places the incision along the inside or back of the upper arm, where it’s less noticeable with your arms at your sides. While scars appear more prominent early on, they generally fade and soften over time.
Dr. Smith also discusses scar care strategies that can optimize healing as your recovery progresses. For most people, the improvement in arm contour far outweighs concerns about the scar.
Your final results take time
One of the biggest misconceptions about cosmetic surgery is that you see the finished result immediately.
You don’t.
Swelling gradually resolves over several months, allowing your final contour to emerge. As your tissues settle and your scars continue to mature, you’ll gain a better appreciation of your long-term results.
Maintaining a stable weight and healthy lifestyle helps preserve those results.
Recovery is a partnership
An excellent outcome depends on how well you care for yourself afterward.
At Rick J. Smith, MD, we believe patients make the best decisions when they know exactly what to expect.
From your initial consultation through every follow-up visit, Dr. Smith and our team guide you through each stage of recovery, answer your questions, and monitor your healing to help you achieve the best possible result.
