What is breast augmentation?

Breast augmentation is a surgical procedure that restores your breasts if they’ve changed due to pregnancy or aging, increases the size of your breasts, or brings symmetry to your bust.

Dr. Smith carries out breast augmentations under a general anesthetic using silicone gel or saline implants, or a fat transfer. The type of implant used depends on the purpose of the surgery and therefore can vary for each patient.

You get general anesthetic for a breast augmentation operation, and once you’re unconscious Dr. Smith makes an incision in the skin below your breast where the post-op scar will be less noticeable.

He then inserts the implant into the incision, below the pectoral muscle in your chest. Using this technique, Dr. Smith ensures the procedure is straightforward and reduces the chances of complications.

How long does it take to recover from breast augmentation surgery?

You’ll need to take a few days off work to recover after the surgery, and you should take it easy for the first month, avoiding any strenuous exercise. There may be swelling and bruising at the surgery site, but this should wear off within a couple days.

Your team at Rick J. Smith, MD, gives you a special support bra to wear for the first few weeks, and prescription painkillers for any post-surgical pain. After a couple of days, you should be able to use over-the-counter pain medicines, and you can return to work if you feel comfortable enough.

When will I see results from breast augmentation surgery?

As soon as you recover from the anesthetic, you’ll be able to see the difference in the shape and size of your breasts. The three months after the surgery are a healing period, after which you’ll be able to see the final results.
