Ear Surgery

Despite what people may say, sometimes you never grow into your ears. If you are uncomfortable with the look of your ears, it may be time to consider otoplasty. Otoplasty is a form of ear surgery that is used to pin back large, prominent or protruding ears and naturalize their appearance. While this procedure is appropriate for adults, it is commonly performed on children between the ages of four and fourteen.

How it works

An otoplasty is performed by making small incisions behind the ear and reshaping and repositioning the ear closer to the head, while leaving unobtrusive scars. After the cartilage has been sculpted, a foam dressing is placed behind the ear to support and mold the newly refined shape. This procedure typically lasts an hour. In some cases, local sedation is used but general anesthesia is also a popular option.

What to expect

Immediately following the surgery, bruising and swelling of the ears can be expected. This swelling should subside after a few days while bruising may take a couple weeks to subside. A head strap is worn at night for three weeks to maintain the new and improved position of your ears. Patients are able to return to work or school within one week of the surgery.
