What’s the Best Age to Have a Facelift?

What’s the Best Age to Have a Facelift?

It’s one of the most common questions we hear at Rick J. Smith, MD, in East Lansing, Michigan. Our answer might surprise you. There’s no single “perfect” age for a facelift. Instead, it depends on your skin, your goals, and your overall health.

Dr. Smith has performed thousands of facial procedures and understands that every face (and every stage of life) is unique. Still, certain trends and biological factors can help you decide when a facelift may deliver the most natural, satisfying results.

Why age matters — and why it doesn’t

Facelifts work best when your skin still has some elasticity and your bone structure can support natural contouring. For most people, that sweet spot falls somewhere between their 40s and 70s.

But the “right” age depends on more than just the number of candles on your cake.

You might consider a facelift earlier if you notice sagging in your lower face or neck that nonsurgical treatments like Botox® and dermal fillers can’t fix. Others may wait until later, when volume loss or deeper folds create a more tired appearance.

The benefits of a facelift in your 40s

In your 20s, your collagen and elastin production begins to slow by about 1-1.5% annually, so by the time you’re 40, you might start seeing early jowls or mild laxity along the jawline. A facelift at this stage can give you subtle and long-lasting improvement.

Because your tissues are still resilient, recovery tends to be faster, and results can look very natural, helping you age gracefully rather than dramatically.

What to expect from a facelift in your 50s

Your 50s are often considered the “golden decade” for facelift surgery. As skin laxity becomes more noticeable, many people find that fillers or skin treatments no longer deliver the lift they want.

At this age, a facelift can turn back the clock by 10 years or more, restoring youthful definition along your cheeks, jawline, and neck while maintaining balance and proportion.

Facelift results in your 60s and 70s

If you’re healthy and active, there’s no upper age limit for facelift surgery. Many people in their 60s and 70s enjoy transformative results when they’re good candidates medically and have realistic expectations.

Older people often benefit from combining a facelift with complementary procedures, such as eyelid surgery, a neck lift, or skin resurfacing, to achieve overall facial harmony.

How young is too young?

Facelift surgery is rarely appropriate before your late 30s. Younger people often respond beautifully to less invasive options, such as injectables, skin tightening, or laser treatments.

However, if you’ve lost significant weight or have early sagging that runs in the family, Dr. Smith can evaluate whether a modified or “mini” lift might make sense.

How old is too old?

There’s no strict upper limit. What matters most is your overall health, skin condition, and healing capacity. Dr. Smith carefully reviews your medical history, lifestyle, and aesthetic goals before recommending any surgical procedure.

With today’s techniques and anesthesia options, many older adults tolerate facelifts very well.

The real question: Are you ready?

If you’re starting to feel that your face no longer reflects your energy or spirit, that’s often a sign you’re ready to explore your options.

A consultation with Dr. Rick Smith, our board-certified plastic surgeon with more than 30 years of experience, can help you understand what kind of facelift and timing will help you achieve your most confident look.
