When It's Time for a Facelift: Here's What You Should Know

Like many cosmetic and plastic surgery procedures, the tools and techniques now available for a facelift have come a long way over the last few decades, making them less invasive and with more natural-looking results than ever. At Rick J. Smith, MD, we offer a range of plastic surgery and non-invasive cosmetic procedures at our office in East Lansing, Michigan.

How a facelift works

During a surgical facelift, Dr. Smith makes a series of small incisions and pulls back the skin for a tighter, more youthful-looking appearance. Our team uses modern tools and techniques, including incisions at the hairline which makes them practically invisible.

A facelift also includes contouring the supporting tissue to restore or improve the dimensions of your face and removing excess fat and loose skin. Since the skin on the neck also tends to become thinner and sag with age, Dr. Smith may also recommend lifting the skin around the neck for uniform results.

The purpose of a facelift is to eliminate deep sagging and folds of skin on the face and neck. While fine lines, wrinkles, and sun damage are the most common and among the first signs of aging, facelifts aren’t generally used to manage wrinkles. Instead, there are several additional treatments available to address fine lines and wrinkles, such as Botox® and other injectables.

Is a facelift right for you?

Everyone ages at a different pace. There’s no “right” or ideal age to get a facelift or other forms of cosmetic surgery. It’s a highly personal decision, and both men and women decide to undergo plastic surgery and cosmetic enhancements due to personal and professional reasons.

If you’re considering a facelift, the first step is to undergo a consultation with our team. Facelifts have become fairly routine and commonplace, but even minor procedures should always be performed by a skilled and licensed professional like those at Rick J. Smith, MD.

At your first consultation, Dr. Smith will review your options and make recommendations based on your current situation and goals. Candidates for a facelift should be in good overall health and have realistic expectations about the outcome.

There have never been more opportunities to look and feel your best at every age.
